History of Marzahn-Hellersdorf

Marzahn-Hellersdorf is a versatile, economically strong and family-friendly district. Hellersdorf is characterised in its urban structure by large prefabricated housing estates, that were built in the GDR era in an "industrial prefabricated construction method". In contrast, Kaulsdorf and Mahlsdorf are dominated by single-family house areas with a village atmosphere. Marzahn is similar to Hellersdorf with heterogeneous prefabricated buildings and single-family house locations. Biesdorf and Friedrichsfelde-Ost have a garden city character and together with Mahlsdorf and Kaulsdorf form the largest connected single-family house area in Berlin.

Most of the buildings in Hellersdorf have been renovated, modernised and landscaped. The district centre "Helle Mitte", that offers multiplex cinema in addition to numerous retail stores and cafés is a star attraction. The Hellersdorfer Promenade is not just a pedestrian zone, but also a neighbourhood management area of the Berlin Senate Department for Urban Development.
